Antique French Watercolor – Château de l’Hers, Provence – November 1927

An enchanting piece of French history, captured in watercolor nearly a century ago.

There is something extraordinarily romantic about an original painting that has survived nearly 100 years, especially when it captures a place steeped in centuries of French history.

This beautiful original French watercolor, dated November 1927, depicts the medieval ruins of the Château de l’Hers, near Châteauneuf-du-Pape in southern France.

Perched dramatically upon a rocky hillside, the ancient château rises above the Provençal landscape, its weathered stone towers surrounded by lush greenery and the warm, earthy colors of autumn.

The artist's delicate brushwork beautifully captures the atmosphere of the French countryside, with muted blues, soft stone grays, olive greens, and rich terracotta tones.

Signed M. le Maire-Vernet, the painting is accompanied by a handwritten inscription (under the framing) dentifying the château and referencing nearby Roquemaure, along with the date November 1927.

The watercolor is presented in a lovely, ornate antique gold-toned frame, whose decorative detailing perfectly complements the painting's old-world French character.

A wonderful piece for a collected French country interior, an intimate gallery wall, a study filled with antique books, or a beautifully layered château-inspired home.
