Description

St. Amand Hamage, Nord France – Late 19th to early 20th century

“They lost their heads, but they kept their dignity.”

These six stunning portrait plates from the renowned St. Amand Hamage faïencerie are rich in historic flair and French court drama. Rendered in softly faded tones and transferred by hand in the late 19th to early 20th century, each plate features a noble figure of the ancien régime — including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette — in period dress, adorned with ribbons, powdered wigs, medals, and pearls.

The edges are gently scalloped with crisp white embossing or delicate gilded rims, and the backs are stamped with the windmill mark of the Nord ceramics region. These were not mass-market souvenir pieces — they were meant for display in a home of taste.

Hang them gallery-style above a console table, or let them peek out of your armoire shelves for a wink of Versailles among your stoneware.

🏰 About the Maker: St. Amand & Hamage Nord

The plates in this set were made by St. Amand & Hamage Nord, a renowned French faience and porcelain manufacturer with roots dating all the way back to 1705. The factory was originally established in Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, an area ideal for ceramics due to its forests, waterways, and transport access.

Over the centuries, the operation evolved through mergers and acquisitions, eventually becoming "Manufacture de Faïence et de Porcelaines Saint-Amand et Hamage Nord" in 1896, employing nearly 700 people at its peak. These factories were known for their beautiful tin-glazed earthenware and finely decorated pieces, including portraits, chinoiserie, and historical themes.

By the early 20th century, the factory began marking its pieces with the mill-and-windmill logo seen on your plate backs. Production continued into the 1950s before the factory permanently closed in 1962.  We've included an old photograph of the factory.
