Description
A remarkable piece to have at Everyday Château: Les Barques en Corse—Fishing Boats in Corsica—by Henry Séné (1889–1961). Golden boats sit against luminous blue water, with warm terracotta hills beyond. The tall composition brings together two views of the boats, allowing the eye to move between a distant shoreline and the richly worked forms in the foreground.
Confident, visible brushwork gives the boats their weight and movement. Ochre, rust, and touches of green glow against the cool blues, while the black frame and narrow gold-toned inner border give this small work a striking presence.
About Henry Séné
Séné was a French painter whose work encompassed landscapes, figures, animals, and larger decorative compositions. His training is documented in the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris’s own collection records, which identify him as a pupil of Fernand Cormon. The school retains examples of his student painting, giving a direct institutional connection to his artistic formation.
His career extended to exhibitions at the Salon des Artistes Français, where published biographical accounts record a silver medal in 1922 and a gold medal in 1932. Travel also played a significant role in his work: accounts describe journeys through North Africa and South America and his leadership of the painting atelier at the École des Beaux-Arts in La Paz, Bolivia.
The atelier stamp
The artist’s atelier stamp is present in the lower-left corner—a particularly meaningful detail linking this verified painting to Séné’s studio. It is an atelier-stamped work, rather than a painting described as hand-signed, and that distinction is part of its history.
