What is the significance of the fleur de lis/lys? The fleur-de-lis appears in artifacts from the Egyptians, Romans, and Scythians, and may have originated in Mesopotamia between 4500 and 1900 BC. It also appears in Babylonian, Indian, and Roman architecture, and on a Mayan vase from 600–900 AD.

The fleur-de-lis is most associated with French royalty and the Catholic Church. According to legend, King Clovis I (466–511) was given a golden lily flower by an angel or the Virgin Mary at his baptism, and the lily symbolized his purification and conversion to Christianity. The fleur-de-lis was used to anoint Clovis as king, and has appeared on the French coat of arms, past versions of the French flag, and the ruling monarch's shield. It has also represented the French monarch's divine right to rule.
