This wonderfully atmospheric vintage artwork is a copy after Jean-François Millet’s celebrated 1857 masterpiece, The Gleaners (Des glaneuses). Millet’s original depicts three women gleaning the remnants of wheat left behind after the harvest—a scene that transformed the ordinary rhythms of rural labor into one of the most recognizable images in nineteenth-century French art.

Here, the familiar composition has been recreated in a wonderfully soft, almost dreamlike hand. The three gleaners bend across the foreground beneath an expansive grey-blue sky, while haystacks, workers and the abundance of the harvest recede into the distance.

The muted sage, ochre, dusty rose and earthen tones are particularly lovely, and the aged dark wood frame gives the entire piece the feeling of something discovered in an old French farmhouse or tucked away in an artist’s atelier.
