At the northern tip of the Door Peninsula lies a legendary stretch of water between Lake Michigan and Green Bay known as Porte des Morts—French for Death's Door.

With its powerful currents, rocky shores, and unpredictable winds, this passage became infamous among early travelers and sailors. Its name, steeped in centuries of history and legend, eventually inspired the name we know today: Door County.

And now, that French connection has come full circle.

In October 2026, Wisconsin established an official sister-state relationship with Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France, celebrating the cultural, educational, and economic ties between our two regions.
