Some Christmas treasures are unpacked from a box. This one was unearthed from the English countryside.
Before it held a candle, this generous antique stoneware crock was a forgotten archaeological find, waiting beneath the earth to be discovered again. Today, its creamy glaze and timeworn surface frame a little moulin, holly, and the greeting Joyeux Noël...a new chapter full of French Christmas charm.
Scent: Tannenbaum
Christmas-tree atmosphere, warm lamplight, and a room made ready for the season. A substantial crock with a story to tell, beautiful among old books, collected porcelain, and the holiday pieces you bring out year after year.
Unearthed in England. Reimagined in Wisconsin.
These crocks begin their journey beneath the English countryside. Our English picker spends countless hours searching and digging for forgotten stoneware, carefully uncovering the little vessels that time has left behind. Finding one is its own small triumph; bringing it back into the light is only the beginning.
These are archaeological finds—authentic antique crocks, with the softly worn glaze, surface markings, and individual character that come from a life long before ours. Each makes its way across the Atlantic to Wisconsin, where our candle designer gives it a beautiful new chapter with a hand-poured candle and newly applied French-inspired artwork.
The history belongs to the crock. The holiday illustration is a new decorative transfer, thoughtfully chosen to complement its age and character. Long after the last flicker, the vessel remains a little piece of history to keep and display.
The maker’s mark: Gray & Sons, Portobello
Turn the crock over and another chapter appears: the Gray & Sons, Portobello maker’s mark. W. A. Gray & Sons operated the Midlothian Pottery at Portobello, near Edinburgh, Scotland, producing the everyday stoneware that once filled British homes. The pottery was particularly known for its patented white marmalade jars.
This is a Scottish-made vessel later recovered in England—an archaeological find with a maker’s identity still preserved underneath. Its exact production date and original contents have not been established, but that surviving mark connects it to a real pottery and the history of ordinary household objects made to last.
Today, the antique crock has been given a new life in Wisconsin as a Tannenbaum candle. The moulin and Joyeux Noël artwork are newly applied decorative transfers; the pottery and its maker’s mark carry the older history.

Candle Care & Fire Safety
- Follow all instructions on the candle’s safety label. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each lighting and keep the wax free of matches, wick trimmings, and other debris.
- Keep a lit candle within sight at all times. Extinguish it before leaving the room or going to sleep.
- Keep away from children, pets, drafts, and anything that can catch fire.
- Place upright on a stable, heat-resistant, nonflammable surface, away from edges and combustible decorations.
- The crock becomes hot. Do not touch or move it while lit or while the wax is liquid; allow it to cool completely before handling.
- Do not burn longer than the candle maker’s recommended time, and never more than four hours at a time.
- Stop burning when ½ inch of wax remains. Extinguish immediately if the flame becomes unusually high, the vessel leaks, or any crack or other damage appears. Do not relight a damaged vessel.
- Use a candle snuffer to extinguish; never use water. Allow the candle to cool before relighting.
